A LOCAL scout leader has expressed his disgust at thieves who stole the troop’s trailer.

Douglas Newman, leader of 1st Maids Moreton Scouts, said the 12ft-long Ifor Williams double-axle flatbed trailer was stolen from the scouts’ field in Chapel Lane, Akeley, between midday on Saturday and 4pm on Monday.

It has been stored in the field for about nine years. The gate, which was locked with a big motorbike chain, is clearly marked as belonging to the scouts.

“It’s disappointing there are people out there who can quite blatantly steal from children,” said Mr Newman.

“It’s going to affect 150 scouts. We’re now without the ability to carry equipment.”

The troop has rented the field for its outdoor activities since 1972.

“We’re the most adventurous scout group in the area,” said Mr Newman. “The troop uses the field for six months of the year, from when the clocks go forward to when they go back, regardless of the weather.

“With scouting, children have freedoms that older people like myself took for granted and kids don’t get now.”

Outdoor activities include firelighting, pioneering and cooking.

The trailer, donated to the troop by the previous scout leader Ian Miles, was used to transport equipment for camps and other activities.

The troop, which is one of the oldest in the country and celebrated its centenary last October, is raising money to make improvements to its wooden scout hut, which Mr Newman says is “falling apart”.

“We can’t afford a new trailer,” he said.

Mr Newman wants anyone who saw anything to contact police on 101 quoting crime reference AG3979932-12.

Anyone who has a replacement trailer the scouts could use can contact Mr Newman at doug@1stmaidsmoretonscouts.org
