The start of a £46,700 project to unearth the mysterious lives of bats was celebrated in north Bucks last week.

On Monday, September 10, Aylesbury Vale District Council and volunteers from the North Bucks Bat Group marked the launch of a ground-breaking project to improve the conservation of bats, which are some of our rarest mammals, and encourage more people to find out about their fascinating lives.

AVDC’s biodiversity team is working in partnership with the North Bucks Bat Group using a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Councillor David Thompson, AVDC’s member for leisure, said the exciting project could only happen with the support of the Lottery and the dedication of the biodiversity team and bat group volunteers.

He added: “Through this we are leading the way nationally and internationally to inform bat conservation.”

Bat group chairman Keith Parnell said: “So little is known about where bats roost and forage in woodlands.

“Our volunteers are going to make a real difference to the future survival of these rare species by investigating the use of artificial and natural roosts to find out how to improve woodlands for bats and create more places for them to shelter and breed.”
