Although Christmas is a time to share, dog owners are being urged to keep one thing to themselves.

South Northants Council is calling on dog owners to ‘bag and bin’ any dog mess their animals leave behind in public places.

Owners who don’t pick up after their dogs are breaking the law and if witnessed, could be liable for a fixed penalty fine of £75, with any fines not paid resulting in further fines of up to £1,000 and additional court costs.

Dog faeces can carry toxocariasis that can cause blindness in humans. Dog owners should always take a poop scoop or bags to clear up after their dog. The waste can be put in any public bin, not just designated dog waste bins.

Members of the public can contact the environmental protection team on 01327 322323 or fill in an online form with the name and address of the person in charge of the dog if known, a description of the dog and date, time and place of the offence.
