As a self-confessed petrol head celebrated his 100th birthday he was given a tour of the Aston Martin factory as the firm celebrated its own milestone.

In the same year Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford made their first cars to race in the Aston Clinton Hill climb, Brackley care home resident Ken Morris was born in Altrincham.

On Thursday, January 31, the former Little Horwood resident was given a tour of the factory in Banbury, before being driven home in a Aston Martin, all arranged by Sally Andrews, homes services advisor at Juniper House in Brackley. On his return he opened a birthday card from the Queen, then was treated to a party, and despite his age scared careworkers with his exploits on the dance floor.

Mr Morris, who had a zero handicap as a young golfer, and won prize money as an professional boxer, said if there was a secret to his long life it would be keeping healthy.

He said: “I suppose it is amazing to turn 100. Anyone who can reach 100 is very fortunate. It’s a gift from god.”

Mr Morris’s love of engineering and cars began as a young man when he worked for his father at John Morris and Sons of Salford building fire engines just before the second world war. During the war in worked at Rolls Royce and witnessed the flight of the first aircraft powered by Sir Frank Whittle’s new jet engines. He said: “I just thought how fantastistic it was and how beautifully the aeroplanes flew through the sky.”

Mr Morris moved to Little Horwood 20 years ago after marrying Mildred King who passed way at Juniper House last year. He had no children of his own but has 10 great great nephews.
