An Olympic Gold medalist and two people caring for prisoners in the Advertiser and Review region were recognised by the Queen in the 2013 New Year Honours list.

Olympic dressage champion, Charlotte DuJardin, who learnt to ride in Gawcott and whose family lives in Finmere, received an OBE for her services to equestrianism.

North Buckinghamshire resident Professor Michael Brookes also received an OBE for his work at HMP Grendon, and Evelyn May Slater received an OBE for her work at HMP Bullingdon.

Miss DuJardin gained international attention after scooping two gold medals during the summer games.

In the team event Charlotte help GB win its first dressage medal.

And as the favourite she quickly followed that up with the individual gold.

The successful year continued for the determined 27-year-old after she broke the world record score at the World Cup freestyle at Olympia in December.

Prof Brookes was credited for his work at the experimental Grendon Prison, one of the oldest therapeutic penal communities in the world.

Research suggests therapy provided by Grendon reduces reoffending in some the most dangerous prisoners.

Grendon Governor Dr Jamie Bennett said: “Prof Brookes is a great guy to work with and everyone is delighted to see that someone has been recognised who really deserves it.”

Prof Brookes said he hoped his work helped those with lives less fortunate than his own.

He added: “It’s also important to recognise Grendon is a very special and unique establishment.”
