Half-marathon success for teacher

A Winslow fitness instructor completed the UK’s biggest half marathon in Newcastle last Sunday.

Sandra Monger, who teaches exercise classes in Granborough Village Hall on Tuesday nights, ran the 13-mile Great North Run in two hours, five minutes 44 seconds, coming 18,119th out of the 55,000 runners. She is hoping to raise £500 for Diabetes UK.

The event was the 11th Great North Run for Mrs Monger, who is herself diabetic.

Mrs Monger, who teaches English and citizen ship at an international school in Oxford, said: “I was just going to do it 10 times but, because it was the Olympic year, I was inspired to carry on.”

Starting in Newcastle, the Great North Run crosses the Tyne Bridge and finishes in the coastal town of South Shields.

Mrs Monger said: “When you come down to the end, you’re running along the coast road by the sea. It’s quite exhilarating.”
