Historic home’s fate in planners’ hands

An application to knock down a big, Victorian Winslow house and replace it with a 14-home estate, which is meeting with opposition from local residents, is likely to be decided by AVDC planners in March.

The plan is set to be discussed by Winslow Town Council’s development committee next Wednesday.

Notice of the applications, by W.E. Black Ltd, to demolish 23 Station Road and build 14 two-storey family houses, were posted on December 13, and already six objections have been lodged by neighbours.

The site falls within Winslow’s Conservation Area, and the applicant says the proposed development “would complement the character of the area”.

But AVDC’s historic buildings officer, Julia Foster, has said: “it is difficult to envisage how the demolition can be justified at this stage”.

Station Road residents Adam and Abigail Cooper expressed concern that the new estate may create a dangerous junction on Station Road.

Station Road resident M.W. Boggis says 14 houses is too many for the site and the proposed allowance of 12 garages and 18 parking spaces is inadequate.

The applications nos 12/02682/ACD and 12/02683/APP can be viewed on the AVDC website. Closing date for comments is January 10.
