THERE is a concern changes to the re-use service at the public tip in Buckingham is a set back for recycling.
For several years Buckingham residents who had unwanted items which could be used again, such as furniture, electrical goods, and sports equipment, could donate them to the re-use service at the tip in Yonder Slade.
Buckingham environmentalists liked the service as was a clear example of how the system should work.
But as part of a revamp of the service the contractor, which runs the Bucks County Council owned waste recycling site, has consolidated the retail of items into shops in Aston Clinton and High Wycombe.
This means items which are taken to Yonder Slade, will be taken to Aston Clinton or High Wycombe for resale.
The service is now being run by FCC Environment, which will be giving all the proceeds to South Bucks Hospice.
Steven Adams, BCC’s councillor for environment, said: “This will radically improve the way in which this service is run.
“Not only will residents be helping to divert valuable items from landfill which can be re-used by others, but they will also be helping a local charity to raise money, which is simply fantastic.”
However John Mortimer of Buckingham Transition Town said a consultation in 2010 did not mention the re-use service.
He added: “I feel the county council put lots of effort into doing the right thing, and in this case they get some of it right, and some wrong.
“All they need to do is to understand the changes from a Buckingham perspective. Ask groups like Buckingham Transition and the Green Buckingham Group. We’re there to help them, not to hinder.”
Mike Smith of the GBG said: “It was a useful service to get rid of things up there, and I had a coffee table from up there once. But these new shops are not shops, they are just tips.
“Aston Clinton is an hour round trip, High Heavens is even further. I’m glad we can still take stuff up there but it’s sad that we won’t have the opportunity to buy stuff. It’s yet another case of centralisation.”
