HS2 compensation scheme is proposed

Home-owners affected by the first phase of the HS2 rail line will be offered “a comprehensive package of compensation measures which go significantly beyond statutory requirements”, the Department for Transport said yesterday, Thursday.

The DfT has launched a compensation consultation document, called High Speed Two: Property and Compensation for London – West Midlands.

The consultation closes on January 31 2013.

Measures proposed include a commitment to buy any owner-occupied home in the ‘safeguarded area’ closest to the route for the full un-blighted value of the property, along with additional compensation of 10 per cent up to a value of £47,000.

Spokesman for the protest group Stop HS2, Joe Rukin, said: “We see this as a cynical, uncosted attempt to buy off the opposition to the project, and it will not work”.
