Library group is ‘optimistic’

The Friends Of Winslow Library have submitted a plan for Winslow Library which would save Bucks County Council (BCC) £20,000 a year while expanding the services the library provides.
The Friends group was formed after BCC announced in January 2011 it planned to close smaller local libraries.
Residents were invited to take over running them as ‘community libraries’.
Communities all over Bucks have come up with different solutions to retaining their libraries.
The solution put forward by the Friends Of Winslow Library retains the services of one professional librarian for all of the hours the library is open, assisted by a team of volunteers, saving about £20,000 a year.
BCC would still own and manage the building and the Friends would promote the library’s services and develop ways of attracting new users and involving local groups.
Chairman of the Friends Guy Hawking said: “We’re optimistic this will be well received. There’s some evidence that similar schemes have been agreed at some of the other community libraries.”
The group hopes to be in a position to call a town meeting early in the new year to explain the plan and mobilise volunteers.
