OLD Latins, former staff and anybody interested in the history of the Royal Latin School are invited to the launch of the Royal Latin School Archive at Rotherfield House on Tuesday, May 1, from 2pm to 5pm.

The archive has been made possible thanks to a grant of £25,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, following work led by former deputy headteacher Andy Cooper, and sixth formers, with students of all ages doing research into significant events in the history of the school.”

Thanks to the funding, the archive has now been able to take over a classroom, which has been redecorated and kitted out with IT and archive equipment, as well as rebuilding an office for students and Old Latins to use.

In the past, said Mr Cooper: “We haven’t done as well as we should have done in keeping records for a school that traces its origins back to 1423 and is the oldest school in Bucks and one of the oldest in the country.”

Research has uncovered all sorts of nuggets of information about the school, old boys and girls, and former staff, and more memories are welcome.

Students are keen to take down people’s oral memories for a Living Archive.

Mr Cooper said: “Any Old Latins in the area who’ve got any old documents are welcome to bring them in here, or we can visit with students to record them.”

People are welcome to browse the archive by arrangement, Tuesdays preferred. Call 01280 813065 to book an appointment.
