WINSLOW could have a new secondary school as soon as next September, after plans to set up a free school in the town were given the green light last week.

The team behind a bid to set up the Sir Thomas Fremantle School in Winslow heard on Friday that their application has been nodded through to the next stage by the Department for Education.

The steering group behind the free school bid consists mainly of parents, teachers and education professionals.

Their preferred location for the school would be the Winslow Centre, owned by Bucks County Council, which used to house the Winslow County Secondary School.

Steering group spokesman, education consultant Catherine Stoker, said: “We are absolutely delighted our application has been accepted. A lot of hard work and effort by the team has given us the opportunity now to create a fantastic school.”

She is confident the school will open in September 2013.

County councillor David Rowlands said: “That’s fantastic. I bet parents in Winslow and the surrounding villages will be absolutely delighted. Kiddies from the Horwoods, Granborough and the Claydons won’t have their long journeys to school.”

Town mayor Llew Monger said: “I think it’s fanciful to think it could be open by 2013.

“I fully understand the desire for a secondary school in Winslow, but why can’t our pupils have a purpose-built building?”
