Names of those who served town live on

MEMBERS of two Winslow families were guests of honour at a street naming ceremony in Winslow on Saturday morning.

Two streets in the new housing development off Verney Road were named after local people who served the community of Winslow in very different ways.

Martin Rolfe cut the ribbon to declare Rolfe Close named in memory of his parents, Bert and Jessie.

Bert Rolfe, who was born in a small cottage on Winslow High Street in 1893, was a signalman at Winslow Station and worked on the railways for 40 years.

Hi wife Jessie, who came to Winslow at the age of 23, was the district nurse and midwife for 40 years, delivering more than 1,000 babies.

They lived in Horn St and later at a purpose-built house with a treatment room at its side in Highfield Road.

Vera Brown, aged 92, cut the ribbon to mark the naming of Browns Close, in memory of her brother, Reg.

Reg Brown was the clerk to Winslow Rural District Council until was abolished in 1973, and a parish councillor for some years after that.

He is widely believed to have been the anonymous benefactor who donated £3,000 to the War Memorial Trust, as he made a number of ‘anonymous’ donations to other causes.Mayor of Winslow Llew Monger said: “It seems fitting that this small close of social housing should be named after someone who cared about those who were disadvantaged.”

Housing developers Bellway provided refreshments in one of their showhomes on the estate.
