New lighting for problem zebra
After years of campaigning, improved lighting is finally going to be installed at a zebra crossing in Winslow that local people say is dangerous.
In 2009, Winslow Town Council asked for new ‘halo’-style belisha beacons to be installed at the crossing, on the High Street near the junction with Avenue Road,where near-misses are regularly reported.
The halo lights have a circle of tiny LED bulbs around the belisha beacon to improve visibility.
The town council even set aside £3,000 to cover half the cost.
But until now, Transport for Bucks (TfB) has resisted calls for improvements, saying there have been no recorded injury collisions on the crossing in the past 10 years.
Resident Terry Capstick has called the crossing “a deathtrap” and childminder Victoria Cochrane has called it “an accident waiting to happen”.

This week, TfB finally capitulated and agreed to install halo lights early in the new year.
Mayor of Winslow Llew Monger said: “Naturally, I am pleased that something I proposed three years ago and secured funding for has finally been agreed. There are some issues outstanding, not least the telegraph pole that obscures the view on the southbound side and we look forward to sitting down and ensuring that some improvement actually happens as soon as possible.”
Mr Bercow said: “I am delighted that, after years of lobbying by Winslow Town Council, my representations to Bucks County Council – along with those of the town council – have borne fruit. I welcome the personal assurance made to me that works will be carried out in the early part of the new year.”
