New manager for Swan Pool
The cabinet of Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) has reaffirmed its decision to enter into a 10-year contract with a leading leisure provider for the management of Buckingham’s Swan Pool and Leisure Centre.
On Tuesday, cabinet members confirmed their approval for Sports and Leisure Management (SLM) to take over the running of both the Swan and Aqua Vale in Aylesbury.
Last year, AVDC invited tenders to manage its leisure centres over the next decade. It says the new contract, due to begin on April 1, will improve AVDC’s financial position by £620,000 a year.
Since 2009, the facilities have been managed by Aylesbury Vale Community Trust (AVCT), a not-for-profit organisation.
Cabinet’s original decision last December to award the contract to SLM was ‘called in’ by three councillors. The decision was then discussed by AVDC’s finance and services scrutiny committee, which referred the matter back to cabinet.
Cabinet member for leisure, David Thompson, said: “The decision to award the contract to SLM has not been taken lightly.
“We have carried out a lot of work to ensure that it represents the best value for money for the council, the service and most importantly our council tax payers.”
