New plans for parking charges at leisure centre

PARKING charges are set to be introduced at Buckingham’s Swan Pool and Leisure Centre from September, if plans by Aylesbury Vale District council (AVDC) go ahead.

The district council announced last week it intends to bring in parking charges because “due to its popularity with non-leisure centre users, members of the leisure centre have found parking difficult.”

It says the aim of the charges is to ease congestion.

Charges will apply from 8am to 5pm on weekdays. The proposed tariff is £1 for up to two hours, £3 for two to four hours and £6 for over four hours.

Leisure centre users will be reimbursed for parking charges up to four hours.

Parking will be free on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.

Any objections or representations must be made in writing by August 1 to Mike Carter, Leisure Facilities Technical Manager at AVDC, The Gateway, Gatehouse Road, Aylesbury HP19 8FF.

Buckingham town councillor Jon Harvey said town councillors carried out a detailed survey of usage of the car park over two weeks last year and never found the car park full.

He said: “If these charges come in, I predict people will start parking on nearby roads causing residents and school buses lots of trouble, the school will have to introduce a permit parking system and enforce that, all of us will have to stump up the cash to pay for the ticket machines and the enforcement, and the staff of the leisure centre will have to start paying tax on benefit in kind if they are offered free car parking.”
