New scheme aims to beat rogue scrap dealers

NEW measures to tackle the blight of metal theft are being brought in across Thames Valley and the South East.

Authorities aim to make it easier to trace stolen metal by requiring scrap dealers to ask sellers for proof of identity.

The scheme was introduced by British Transport Police earlier this year, and is now being brought in across the country.

Scrap yards are not obliged to sign up to the scheme, codenamed Operation Tornado, but those that do not will be subject to a police risk assessment.

Det Ins Ian Wood said: “We are hoping all registered scrap metal dealers in the region will sign up to be involved to help fight the stolen metal trade and make it more difficult for thieves to make money by targeting our communities for metal.”
