Nothing is what it seems in spoof murder mystery

The latest production from Buckingham-based amateur theatre group the Old Gaolers is the comedy thriller, Whodunnit.

Written by Anthony Shaffer, the author of Sleuth, the play is a spoof on the classic Agatha Christie-style mystery, with a diverse group of characters gathered in a country house for the weekend, each of whom could have a motive for murder.

The play takes place in the grand library of Orcas Champflower Manor.

Six strangers and a butler have gathered for a black tie dinner in a wealthy lawyer’s mansion during a thunderstorm.

The guests include an aged rear admiral, a bitchy aristocrat, a doddering old archaeologist and a dashing young cad.

One of the guests is an oily Levantine who tells each of the others in private that he has the goods to blackmail them.

Clearly, motives for his murder abound.

But Whodunnit?

“…Enough riotous surprises to supply another mystery dramatist with a trunkful of plays,” said New York magazine about the 1982-1983 Broadway production.

Performances are at at 8pm at Buckingham Community Centre from Thursday to Saturday, November 1 to 3.

Refreshments are available during the interval.

Tickets cost £10 (£8 concessions) from The Duke’s Music, on Market Hill, Buckingham, on 01280 821771 or via www.oldgaolers.org.uk
