Owners respond to Watersreach gossip

THE developers behind the controversial Watersreach development in Buckingham’s Bridge Street have denied rumours that the building has been condemned.

The basement car park to the 77-apartment block flooded before the building was completed, in May.

The first few units were let to tenants but in October we reported that the owners, Guinness South, had decided not to accept any more of the units from the builders, Lagan Homes, until the flooding issue had been resolved.

Several readers have asked the Advertiser to investigate gossip that the block is uninsurable or has been condemned.

But this week, Guinness South’s senior development manager, Rod Pearson, said rumours were unfounded.

Mr Pearson said: “Guinness South is aware that the basement car park at Bridge Street, Buckingham, hasflooded due to recent prolonged heavy rain.

“We take our responsibility as a landlord very seriously and the safety of our residents is paramount.

“The basement car park was designed to handle the impact of flooding without any effect on the safety of the homes above, and to have fully functioning utility services even when the basement is underwater.

“All of the occupied homes at the site are structurally sound, are safe to be lived in and have the appropriate building regulations approvals.

“Rumours that the site has been condemned and that we are unable to insure the properties are all untrue.

“All the homes on the site have valid building insurance.

“We keep in regular contact with the residents of the 26 occupied homes to keep them up-to-date with the progress we are making in working with our contractors and other partners in finding a long-lasting resolution to the car park flooding.

“We will not be letting any further homes on this scheme until we are happy we have found a resolution for the existing residents.”
