Oxfordshire drink-drive arrests rise by 15 per cent
THE number of drink-driving arrests in Oxfordshire over the Christmas and new year period rose by more than 15 per cent this year.
Police said they were disappointed by the result, which saw 77 people arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in Oxfordshire this year compared to 64 last year.
The highest recorded reading was 138 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, taken from a 37-year-old Banbury man. The legal limit is 35 milligrams.
He is due to appear before Banbury Magistrates’ Court on Friday, January 20.
Superintendent Chris Brown, head of the Thames Valley roads policing department, said: “It is disappointing to see a rise in the number of people who are still not prepared to accept the dangers posed by drink driving.
“A police officer has the power to stop any vehicle and once a police officer suspects the driver has been drinking, he will test the driver.”
Of those arrested, 82 per cent were men and 18 per cent were women. There was a 57 per cent increase in the number of women caught drink driving this year.
