Junior school pupils in Oxfordshire are outperforming those in many parts of the country, according to new figures released by the Government.

Results from pupils in Key Stage 2 – aged seven to 11 – were at around the national average last year, but have pulled ahead by three per cent this year.

Councillor Melinda Tilley, Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet member for education, said: “There has been a lot of focus on early years education in children’s centres in Oxfordshire and I am sure this has contributed to the improvement we have seen this year.

“While this is a move in the right direction we want to be seeing similar improvements across the age ranges in times ahead and in all parts of Oxfordshire.”

The county’s results in the ‘gold standard’ Level 4+ level in English and maths have risen by seven per cent, compared to a national increase of four per cent.

The proportion of county children reaching Level 4+ in English and maths is 82 per cent.
