Police claim vindication as crimes fall at Moto weekend

POLICE chiefs are reporting a downward trend in crime at the Moto GP event following last weekend’s race meet which attracted 146,000 spectators over three days.

Last weekend 13 crimes were recorded, the second consecutive decrease for that weekend, with 14 crimes were recorded last year and 33 in 2010.

Superintendent Sean Bell, event commander, said spectators were good natured and there were no major incidents and added: “We were confident that, with our pre-event planning, work with Silverstone and other partners such as Thames Valley Police and Northants Fire and Rescue, our policing operation would meet the needs and demands of this event and we were proved right.

“It’s also good news that we recorded only 13 crimes during the weekend, which means more people are being more vigilant around crime prevention.

“I would like to praise the vast majority of race goers who were law-abiding and supportive and who helped make the Moto GP such a tremendous sporting occasion and safe event.”

Of the crimes reported 11 related to thefts from tents.
