Public lecture from Police and Crime Commissioner

Anthony Stansfeld

Anthony Stansfeld

The speaker at the annual Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Lecture at the University of Buckingham on Tuesday, March 5, is Thames Valley’s newly elected Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Anthony Stansfeld.

The free lecture, at 6.30pm, is entitled PCCs – Why Do We Need Them? Mr Stansfeld will talk about community safety, crime prevention and drugs.

Police and Crime Commissioner is a new job introduced by the coalition government last year to bring direct democratic accountability to policing in England.

The Commissioner sets the priorities for the police in Thames Valley. He will set the annual budget and the council tax precept. He will also have powers to hire or fire the chief constable.

Mr Stansfeld is a councillor for West Berks Council and was a member of the Thames Valley Police Authority for several years. He has had a career in industry and in the military.

The lecture takes place in the Ian Fairbairn Lecture, in the Chandos Road building.

On Tuesday, March 19, Prof Madhav Das Nalapat’s lecture is entitled Beyond Churchill – A 21st Century Anglosphere.

Anglosphere is not about faith, ethnicity or pigeonholing, but more about freedom and flexibility of mind, civility and co-operation.

Professor Nalapat will discuss how Asia is ready to trump the West as the dominant force of the world and how India has meaningful qualities to offer the Anglosphere of the 21st century.
