Red roses mark a red letter day for surgery survivor

A BUCKINGHAM woman was presented with red roses on the 25th anniversary of her heart transplant.

Joyce Oliver was presented with the roses and her husband Ken, a Rotarian, was given a bottle of wine by president of Buckingham Rotary, Jane Mordue at a joint meeting with the Rotary Club of Winslow on Tuesday night.

Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub began his pioneering heart surgery in 1967 before beginning work at Harefield Hospital in 1969. Among celebrities whose lives he extended was the comedian Eric Morecambe.

Mrs Oliver, who had her operation in 1986, is one of the longest-surviving heart transplant patients.

As a result In 1986 came the heart transplant operation on Joyce Oliver, who has gone on to become one of the longest surviving heart patients over 25years.

Rotarian Ken Oliver’s wife Joyce was presented with red roses on the very day of her 25th anniversary of receiving a heart transplant at Harefield Hospital.

This is highly significant since those were the days of pioneering heart surgery and the success rate in terms of life expectancy was extremely low.
