The parking are in Market Place Towcester is to be redesigned after the Highways Agency gave South Northants Council £100,000 to improve air quality.

In 2005 parts of Watling Street were declared an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) after levels of nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant associated with road traffic, were found to be above the permitted level.

The funding will be used to redevelop the market square to improve the flow of traffic through the town centre and reduce the congestion caused by vehicles manoeuvring in and out of the parking area, in the hope it will bring pollution back down to an acceptable level.

Councillor Dermot Bambridge, SNC’s cabinet member for environmental services, said the health of town residents is vital and added: “We are delighted to have been successful in our bid as it will lead to a considerable improvement of air quality in the town centre, and combined with the work being carried out at the junction with the A5/A43, traffic flow should improve significantly.”

Working in partnership with the HA and Northants County Council (NCC) the parking areas in the Market Square will be redesigned to minimise the disruption to traffic flows and make parking easier.

There will be meetings with the Towcester Town Council and representatives from the local businesses to explain the proposals and discuss the proposed Traffic Regulation Orders. Details of the scheme will be announced following these discussions.

The HA is in charge of the design and construction of the scheme and any queries relating to these contact Bruce Martin, customer and community relations manager at A-one+, by email at area7enquiries@aone.uk.com.
