Riding family are outstanding pair

A BROTHER and sister who have taught generations of children from across the Buckingham area to ride are this year’s outstanding citizens.
Theodore and Mary Connor, who run Stowe Ridings, were voted for by you in the first outstanding citizen award run by Buckingham Rotary and the Advertiser and Review.
The Connors have been running the stables for more than 50 years when they took over from their father, who was riding master at Stowe School, in 1964.
They have been teaching people to ride ever since, making it affordable for those who would not normally have the money to learn to ride, although they are now no longer taking on any new learners.
Glenn Atkins, who nominated the Connors said: “We can remember paying as little as 75p an hour in the 1970s for our children who still remember those happy days.”
Speaking to the Advertiser, Mary Connor said: “We have so many lovely volunteers who help us and we would like to thank them.
“We are very pleased to have won as the other nominees are very worthy. It seems we have had grandmothers, grandfathers, people from the past voting as well as some people getting their school friends to vote.
“We are thrilled and we want to thank everyone who voted for us.”
The Connors will receive an engraved shield and a Boycott Farm hamper.
The shortlist of nominees included Ros Hutt, who was nominated for her work with senior citizens through Age Concern, in Buckingham and Ron Thompson, who was nominated for his work with several community organisations including The Old Gaol, Relay for Life and town schools.
