ROCK legend - and Tingewick resident - Bernie Marsden is no stranger to fame, but got the chance to meet a fellow legend at a recent film premiere.

Mr Marsden was invited to perform at the London premiere of the film Rock of Ages, in Leicester Square earlier this month.

The film, which stars Tom Cruise as rock god Stacee Jaxx, tells the story of two teenagers who meet while chasing their dreams.

The film features the Whitesnake hit, Here I Go Again On My Own, and the film’s producers contacted Mr Marsden to seek his permission to use the song.

He said: “I then got asked to put a band together by Carl Grant from local company Performance Entertainment Ltd. He called me and said, ‘I have this idea of putting a real band together to play at the premier.’

“I said, ‘Yes, great. That’s really going to happen!’ but it did. It took a lot of planning.”

The band included Mr Marsden, Phil Spalding, who has played with Robbie Williams and Take That, on bass, singer Robert Hart, who has performed with Bad Company, and Mark Stanway, from Magnum.

And during their performance, Diego Boneta, who stars in the film, got up to sing with the band.

Among the songs they performed were Here I Go Again On My Own, Don’t Stop Believing by Journey, Wanted Dead or Alive, by Bon Jovi.

Mr Marsden, along with his wife, Fran, and daughters Charlotte and Olivia, also met Tom Cruise at the premiere.

He said: “Tom was such a nice guy and he made a big fuss of us. His attention to detail was really good for such a big star.

“When they were leaving after the film, I gave him a wave. He came over to me and gave me a hug and said, ‘Thank you for your help with the movie.’

“I said, ‘You must have seen some of the singers I have worked with over the years because you were just like them.’

“He said, ‘Coming from you, that’s a compliment.’”

He also met actor Paul Giamatti.

Rock of Ages is currently showing in cinemas and is also a stage musical, showing in the West End.

Mr Marsden is also performing a sell-out show at The Stables, in Milton Keynes tomorrow, Saturday.
