Royal Latin School unveils plans for a new £5 million discovery centre

The Royal Latin School has launched a campaign to raise £5 million for a new ‘discovery centre’ for use by the school and community.
The 600 Campaign, which was launched on Thursday last week, outlined a three phase plan to improve facilities at the school by 2023, the school’s 600th anniversary.
The first phase includes the building of the discovery centre by 2015, which will consist of 12 laboratories, each centred around a different scientific topic.
It is hoped the centre will provide students with much-needed skills which are most sought after by science and technology firms in the UK and overseas.
The school will be working in partnership with companies in a bid to raise the money needed. Firms will be asked if they wish to sponsor one of the 12 laboratories.
Headteacher, Mr Hudson said: “The aim of the 600 Campaign is to fulfil the school’s vision to create a state-of-the-art learning environment that will continue to enable extraordinary achievement by RLS students and will bring the school closer still to the needs of businesses, universities and the local community.
“The 600 Campaign will seek to secure the involvement of companies, parents, alumni and other private individuals in supporting the development of the school as it prepares itself for the next phase in its history.”
The school already has raised around 10 per cent of the amount needed.
Buckingham and Winslow MP, John Bercow, who is also campaign patron said at the launch he was proud to have the school in his consituency, but warned it would be down to the school to raise the money it needed.
He said: “This will not be delivered by government because I’m afraid the fiscal freeze has a trickle down effect everywhere in the country.
“I have had an exchange of letters with education secretary, Michael Gove, and his letter was full of warm words of encouragement for which we are grateful, but there is no money on the table whatsoever.”
Earlier on the day, as part of the launch, more than 830 RLS students took part in an attempt to carry out the world’s largest science experiment.
Celebrities from the world of science have also offered their support including Johnny Ball, who has agreed to come into the school to work with some of the students, and Jem Stansfield from Bang Goes the Theory.
