Great Horwood-based charity Medical Detection Dogs is to have a royal visit next Wednesday.

The Duchess of Cornwall will learn about the work of the charity, which trains assistance dogs to help people with life-threatening medical conditions and detection dogs which can sniff out cancer cells.

Last month, teachers from local schools and nurseries attended an open afternoon at the charity’s premises to learn how one local primary school is using its special relationship with the Medical Detection Dogs to deliver aspects of the national curriculum.

The partnership with East Claydon School began two years ago, when a litter of 10-week-old puppies visited the school.

Headteacher Barry Rogers has worked alongside the charity to create curriculum guides for teachers and learning resources to support other schools in working with the charity in the future.

Mr Rogers said: “While the schools project was established at my school, it is great other schools have shown an interest and I am hopeful in time the project can be shared nationally.”
