Rugby club on way to £275k extension

THE Towcestrians Rugby Club is well on its way to raising the £275,000 it needs to extend its 40-year-old clubhouse.
But the club is still looking for community support and is running a ‘buy a brick’ campaign, giving supporters a stake in a legacy designed to last for the next 50 years. Those who take part in the campaign will have their names listed on the clubhouse wall.
Club spokesman Crispin Slee said: “The target is just over £275,000 for the extension. £120,000 will come via a match funded grant from South Northants Council. But we are also very grateful to Silverstone Circuit who have agreed to back us for five years and the Heygate Flower Mill near Bugbrooke.
“We’ve also had a substantial donation from the Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation and R&S Compressors in Northampton.
“We are in the process of speaking to all of these people but clearly we want to raise money internally, among the people using the club, hence the buy a brick campaign.”
Mr Slee stressed the extension will not only benefit the rugby club and the hockey, tennis, and cricket teams which share it, but is also a key facility for a wide range of community groups including the Greens Norton Community Choir and the Young Farmers’ Club.
Mr Slee added: “It is a fantastic facility for the local community and hopefully if we can raise the money it will be even better.”
The club has already held a number of fundraising events, and money raised at the Towcester Beer Festival during the May Bank Holiday weekend and the Jubilee Ball on Friday, June 1, will also go towards the extension.
SNC councillor Ian McCord said: “Towcestrians Sports Club delivers a fantastic resource for the local community and encourages people of all ages and abilities to participate in a number of sports including rugby, tennis, cricket and hockey.
“Towcester is expanding and we want to have better sports and leisure facilities ahead of the housing growth so this investment is in keeping with our strategy, including the recent Moat Lane developments.
“We are delighted to announce that we have allocated £120,000 to help fund improved facilities, which is one third of the total project cost of £348,000, and is one of the largest grants ever given to a single project.”
