Eva Welby

Eva Welby

A WELL-KNOWN Preston Bissett woman will be remembered at a church service next Saturday,.

Eva Welby, who passed away recently aged 97, was a well-known figure in the Buckingham area for more than 50 years.

Born in south London in 1915, Miss Welby spent her early years working with disadvantaged children there. Her family were evacuated from London to Barton Hartshorne, where she joined the Land Army.

In the 1950s, she moved with her widowed mother to a cottage in Preston Bissett, where she lived for the next 50 years.

She became a teacher of children with special needs, working until retirement at a school in Bletchley.

A committed Christian, Miss Welby worshipped at Gawcott Methodist Church, becoming a local preacher in 1947. For 60 years she took services in the surrounding area.

In her later life, Miss Welby moved to a Methodist care home in Westcliffe-on-Sea.

Well Street United Church member Enid Hodges said: “She was a lovely lady and she was very dedicated. Whatever she did she put her heart and soul into it. Even in later life, she bought a computer and taught herself to use it and did all manner of things on it.”

There will be service to remember Miss Welby and celebrate her life at 2pm on Saturday, May 12, in Gawcott Methodist Chapel.
