Residents trying to make their villages safer and more pleasant places to live have received financial support from their county councillors.
Every year the 73 members of Northants County Council are given £7,000 for community projects in their ward.
This week residents of Syresham celebrated the planting of a jubilee tree which will be protected by railings partly paid for by councillor Andrew Grant’s Empowering Councillors and Communities Fund, and installed for free by a local firm.
Meanwhile a vehicle activated speed sign recently installed in Evenley has already clocked a driver doing 79mph in a 30mph zone. Half the £3,000 cost of the device came from councillor Ron Sawbridge’s fund.
Mike Bosher, of Evenley Parish Council said they had a responsibility to improve road safety for all village residents and added: “Many years ago it succeeded in changing the road priority at the junction of Broad Lane with The Green. More recently the parish council with Evenley residents agreed to investigate mobile vehicle activated speed signs.

“Sourcing of suitable equipment was handled by councillor Mike Bosher. Fundraising by councillor Alan Thornhill included money raised during the village’s 2011 Christmas party, residents’ donations, and a very generous grant from county councillor Ron Sawbridge’s Empowering Councillors Scheme, secured the speed sign equipment which was installed in August of this year. The top speed recorded through the village to date is 79mph in a 30mph limit.”
