Shock after cannabis seizure in Towcester town centre

Cannabis factory found Watling Street

SHOPKEEPERS in Towcester spoke of their shock this week after the discovery of cannabis factory right under their noses.

On Friday, May 18, officers from the Towcester Safer Community Team raided a property in the courtyard behind the old Kaby garage in Watling Street East.

After searching the property they found around 90 mature cannabis plants being grown with sophisticated hydroponic equipment.

Frank O’Callaghan, owner of Humbugs sweet store just two doors away, said he knew nothing about the raid until he got home and his son told him about the cannabis find.

Mr Callaghan said he has never seen a raid of this kind in Towcester and added: “It is an astounding shock.

“Sometimes landlords think they know their tenants and know what they get up to. But I suppose it is a case of landlords beware.”

“But more worrying is if it signals a huge supply of products likes this. If there’s more in the supply chain it gets cheaper and becomes more affordable to those who shouldn’t be able to afford it.”

Inspector Helen Pritchett who took over from Insp Alex Terry last month, said the raid will have an impact on Towcester. She said: “We are committed to reducing offences relating to drug supply and this seizure will have a significant impact on the community.

“Throughout the day, local officers, supported by other agencies have worked hard to make the location safe. We are now seeking a number of people in connection with the location.”

Insp Pritchett said intelligence for the community is vital in order to crack down on cannabis factories and appealed to people to report their suspicions by calling police on 101.
