POLICE are appealing for witnesses, after four lambs were shot in a farmer’s field last Thursday night.

Farmer David Verey found three of the lambs dead and one injured early on Good Friday, April 6.

The two to three-week-old youngsters were in a field of 30 ewes with lambs on Mr Verey’s land at Manor Farm, in Bourton Road, Buckingham.

Mr Verey told the Advertiser he thought the lambs had been shot from across the River Great Ouse, and that the weapon used was a .22 rifle because the bullets appeared to have gone straight through them.

He said: “We cut one open and it had got broken ribs and the spine was damaged. Two of the others had got holes right through them.”

Mr Verey, aged 55, who was born on the farm and said he has been farming “for ever”, said he had never come across anything like this before.

He said: “It’s not what you expect to find. I don’t know why they would do it – just target practice, I think.

“They didn’t shoot any of the big ewes, just the lambs.

“Nobody saw anything or heard anything.

“We just hope it’s a one-off.”

The fourth lamb, which was shot though the cheek, has made a full recovery after being treated with antibiotics for three days.

PC 7042 Ian Carter from Buckingham Police Station has appealed for anyone who saw anything or knows anything about this incident to call him via the police non-emergency number 101.

The crime report number is AG4027041/12.
