Garden Buddies scheme

Garden Buddies scheme

An invigorating new gardening project is offering volunteers a chance to help people in their community and get active at the same time.

Garden Buddies, launched by snvb last summer, provides a basic gardening service to people who have no other source of help with an added bonus of improved fitness and wellbeing for the volunteers.

The green-fingered gang has already tackled more than 50 jobs in the first six months with many volunteers saying their health and happiness have been boosted as a result.

A typical Garden Buddies ‘workout’ session lasts four hours (optional) and can include digging, weeding, grass cutting, although volunteers are welcome to choose lighter duties such as pruning and potting, if they prefer.

The project worker supervises every session and all tools, protective equipment and training are provided.

If you would like to find out more about what Garden Buddies could do for you, contact Nicola Shaw on 01327 358264.

Not keen on gardening? No problem! snvb can help find the ideal volunteering role for you while offering plenty of information and support. Contact Nicola Shaw on 01327 358264 for an informal chat or email nicola@snvb.org.uk.

Alternatively, you can visit the national volunteering database, www.doit.org.uk to check out the latest volunteering opportunities in your area.

Most organisations will provide training and travel expenses and you can decide how much time you want to give before you start. Please note that some of these roles will require a Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly CRB) check.
