THE LATEST round of public consultation on a document which will shape the future of south Northants over the next 14 years will begin at the end of this month.
Work began on the West Northants Joint Core Strategy in 2007, and consultations on draft versions were carried out in 2009 and 2011. Changes to the strategy as a result of those consultations will now be discussed by members of the West Northants Joint Planning Committee (WNJSPC) later this year.
The strategy sets out the vision for the whole of west Northants, including Brackley, Towcester, Daventry, and Northampton, and identifies specific locations for housing, employment, and changes to transport infrastructure and supporting community facilities, as well as defining where development will be restricted.
Tim Hadland, vice chairman of the WNJSPC said: “This document is of vital importance for the west Northants area which urgently needs an up to date planning framework as the local authorities existing plans are dated.
“The Core Strategy will provide a robust plan to direct future development which is needed by local people to create sustainable locations, secure regeneration and inward investment in our urban areas, and to protect the whole area from inappropriate development proposals.”
Significant changes to the strategy, bought about by the economic climate, and by taking into account housing already built or in the planning process since the last consultation, equate to 300 fewer homes in Towcester and 50 fewer homes in Brackley. The latest version also gives a greater weight to the protection of heritage assets and the environment.
