Tea room owners take on Olympic challenge
THE owners of Towcester Tea Rooms will host a triple fund-raising challenge to celebrate
this year’s Olympic Games.
Sharon and Tony McMurray, who run the cafe in Watling Street, Towcester, are organising the Triple Olympic Challenge charity event.
The fundraiser, which includes three sporting challenges, will raise money for The Alzheimer’s Society, where Mr McMurray volunteers, and the Towcester Gateway Club, which provides evening leisure activities for adults with learning difficulties.
The challenge will include two marathons, a bike ride and a kayak race, and Mrs McMurray will complete the first leg when she runs the Silverstone Half Marathon on March 11.
Mrs McMurray, who teaches dance at the Gateway Club, said: “I am slowly building up my mileage, which can be a challenge in the winter cold, but I am determined to succeed and raise as much money as possible for these lovely people.”
Avid fundraiser Mr McMurray, who has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats and attempted to climb Mont Blanc, will take on the TOW2TOW challenge in April.
He will bike ride from the Towcester Gateway Club in Riverside, Towcester to London, where he will kayak along the Thames past the headquarters of The Alzheimer’s Society in Tower Bridge and onto the Olympic Stadium, before taking part in the London 2012 Marathon on April 22.
He said: “I wanted to do a challenge that pays homage to London 2012. This is the greatest show on earth and I am thrilled to have my challenge centred around this once in a lifetime event.”
Mr McMurray will compete the final leg of the challenge when he volunteers as a driver at the Olympic Village in July and August during the games.
The annual Towcester Tea Rooms Tea Dance in Towcester Town Hall will raise more funds on March 18.
