THE FULL STORY: Green light to £3.1million improvements to junction of A5 and A43

Guaranteed traffic jams around Towcester could become a thing of the past after the Government gave the green light to a £3.1million improvement programme for the junction of the A5 and A43 dual carriageway.
Twice a day traffic between the A5 and the McDonalds roundabouts comes to a virtual stand still, adding time onto daily commutes and adding to local pollution.
This week the Highways Agency announced the project would be part of a wider £217million spending programme designed to improve safety, reduce congestion at more than 50 ‘pinch points’ around country, including Junction 10 of the M40, while boosting the national economy.
In a statement from south Northants MP Andrea Leadsom she said: “This will be welcome news for residents and commuters alike who are sick and tired of the lengthy queues they face in the area.
“The A43 will be developed to include three lanes along with traffic lights at the junction in question, as well as at the junctions before and after.
“The process is due for 2014, so will happen well before the Towcester expansion plans are completed.”
She added: “I thoroughly welcome this news and the relief it will bring to motorists in south Northamptonshire, and particularly to the residents of Towcester who will no longer be trapped in their town by enormous tailbacks.”
Rebecca Breese, South Northants councillor for planning and environment, said: “This is not only marvellous news for the local economy and commuters, but good news too for local residents who have had to contend with delays here for far too long.”
Martin Johns, a member of Towcester Town Council, said with plans to double the number of houses in Towcester, and major developments for the Silverstone race circuit, something had to be done to improve the flow of traffic now.
He added: “It could not go on as it is, especially in the current economic climate, and when Towcester and Silverstone grow it is only going to put more pressure on the roads.”
