Theatre at its most enjoyable

If you’re a lover of good theatre, beat a path to Aylesbury’s Waterside Theatre.

There was a well-deserved standing ovation for the cast of new drama Maurice’s Jubilee at yesterday’s press night.

The three-hander, written by Olivier Award-winning actor Nichola McAuliffe, is at the Waterside tonight and tomorrow, Thrusday and Friday, and twice on Saturday.

Terminally ill Maurice is determined to reach his 90th birthday, the day before the Diamond Jubilee. The Queen, having made him a promise 60 years before, is coming to tea.

The acting, by McAuliffe, Julian Glover and Sheila Reid, is simply superb – you could have heard a pin drop during Glover’s monologue at the end of Act 1 – and the play moves the audience effortlessly from laughter to tears and back again.

Theatre at its most enjoyable.
