Time capsule burial for RBL anniversary

Greens Norton RBL bury time capsule to mark the 60th anniversary of their Clubhouse, the last remaining in the county.

Greens Norton RBL bury time capsule to mark the 60th anniversary of their Clubhouse, the last remaining in the county.

A TIME capsule was buried in Greens Norton last weekend as the village remembered its fallen soldiers and celebrated the 60th birthday of the county’s last remaining Royal British Legion Clubhouse.

After the Remembrance Day Service at St Bartholomews Church, a ceremony at the clubhouse saw Maddy Punch, a relative of a Greens Norton RBL member, place the capsule in the wall. It contains the names of the soldiers currently on the war memorial, as well as pictures and mementoes showing how the village marked Armistice Day.

In 1952 the Legion was given a piece of land in the village for the clubhouse by the Basford family. Members at the time drove over to a local airfield (believed to be either Finmere or Bicester) and picked up a surplus-to-requirements army hut which they converted into a clubhouse. With many tradesman among the RBL ranks the oak framed hut, with original cast iron roof, has been well maintained.

Robbie Paice, current president and chairman, said its condition is as good as the day it was put up and that it is a ‘precious and valuable community asset’.

He added: “Some of those who put it up are still in the village, along with their relatives. There are so many people who have gifted their time and effort to keep the building going or to run
social activities.

“And when you see that it brings together every generation, you realise how deeply embedded it is in
village life.”

The clubhouse is open every weekday evening and also on lunchtimes on Saturday and Sunday and anyone is welcome.
