‘Tough decision’ after slash in Government funding
South Northamptonshire Council offices in Springfields,Towcester.
A consultation into changes to Council Tax benefit has been launched by South Northants Council as a result of significant funding reductions imposed by central Government.
In April 2013, the Government will abolish the Council Tax Benefit scheme and replace it with the local Council Tax Reduction Scheme.
As part of this, the amount of funding being provided to local authorities is being reduced by at least 10 per cent - around £325,000 per year in south Northants.
To meet a shortfall SNC is proposing to limit benefits available to a maximum of 80 per cent of the total council tax bill for all non-pensioners.
Ian McCord, SNC’s member for resources said: “This is one of the toughest decisions that we have had to make.”
The consultation ends Sunday, November 4.
