Town gathering support for new fitness facility

WINSLOW has got the keep-fit bug, if enthusiasm for the town’s latest project is anything to go by.

Plans for an outdoor fitness area were showcased at the town’s Olympic torch celebrations earlier this month, and public support was impressive.

The outdoor fitness area, suitable for people of all ages, is a joint scheme between Winslow Women’s Institute and Winslow Town Council.

WI committee member Ann Abraham told the Advertiser: “We had over 100 signatures on the Monday showing support.

“We had some young people and a lady in her 90s who said she wouldn’t be able to use it but she thought it was a good idea,” she said.

“We feel it would be a perfect opportunity to give something to the community of Winslow, and particularly to be able to do something for the older people of Winslow.

The project arose out of a town meeting when a member of the public commented that the town council was doing a lot for the youth of the town and asked what it intended doing for the older generation

Town councillor David Barry said: “There’s an amazing amount of support for this.

“We’re hoping to fund it from grant aid so the cost to the taxpayer will be negligible.”

Both the town council and the WI will be making funding applications in the near future, with a view to the outdoor gym being installed hopefully by next spring at a central location with ready access for all.

The town council also hopes to create a footpath to allow access for people with disabilities.

Mr Barry appealed to local fitness organisations to get in touch and give their views.

Mrs Abraham said: “We’re hoping, if we get the funding, to have a couple of seats around it so it will be a social area as well.

“Getting people excercising together is a lovely idea.

“There are lots of people chatting about it – it’s gaining momentum.”

Draft plans will be on display at a fundraising WI garden party on Saturday, August 4, at the home of WI president Thelma Sackman.

Entry is free to the garden party at 2 Magpie Way, from 1.30pm to 4pm, and there will be tea, cakes and crafts on sale.
