University of Buckingham law lecturer takes on international sport case

A University of Buckingham senior law lecturer is acting as counsel in an international sport case.

Dr Gregory Ioannidis is acting as counsel for Olympic taekwondo gold medallist Mu-yen Chu and the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, this week.

The appeal is against a decision by the International Olympic Committee to disqualify Mr Chu from the Athletes’ Commission election, during the Olympic Games in London.

He was disqualified over alleged breaches of strict campaigning rules after polling enough votes to win seats on the commission.

Mr Chu denies the allegations which include the claim he may have handed out lollipops to promote his candidature.

The hearing starts today, Monday, and Dr Ioannidis is being assisted by co-counsel Philip Gibbs and Buckingham graduates, Selvyn Hawkins, Leanne Coulton and Harriotte Underwood.
