‘Use cop tsar vote to protest at cuts’

George Street. Andy Sawford meeting Lee Barron, the Labour candidate for Police commissioner for Northamptonshire.

The Labour candidate for the Northants Police Crime Commissioner role wants to turn November’s election into a vote against the Coalition government’s cuts to front line policing.

Northampton resident and proud father Lee Barron said a vote for any of the coalition candidates would be a reaffirmation of the national cuts to policing, and is promising to challenge budgets if elected.

Mr Barron has also promised to give up one third, or £23,100 of the £70,000 salary, to put a PCSO back on the beat.

As a trade union official and member of the local authority he believes his experience in representing the views of others, and his belief in social justice, make him the ideal candidate.

Speaking to the Advertiser he said: “My natural gut reaction is to turn around and do three things; first all represent people’s views, secondly, don’t be populist, be honest. Because then the third thing comes on its own and that’s respect. That what’s important to this job, to give people leadership.”

Mr Barron, who launches his manifesto tomorrow, Saturday, September 8, is committed to protecting the chief constables control over day to day policing. He also said the outsourcing of police will not happen with him in charge and wants to get rid of the compulsory retirement age which sees the experience of long serving officers pushed out the door.

He has also promised to carry out what he describes as the largest consultation exercise in county’s history, and will draw up a contract between communities and himself to ensure their policing priorities are met.
