Vale’s green officer is leading by example

editorial image

A THORNBOROUGH man will be throwing open the doors to his eco-friendly converted farm workers cottage to show others how he reached a 67 per cent reduction in carbon emissions.

Robert Smart is sustainability officer for Aylesbury Vale District Council and when he heard he could have his home designated a Super Home, he decided to put his money where his mouth is.

He said: “We have all these CO2 reduction targets, but the challenge is not just new homes with super low emissions, the real challenge is the homes that most people live in now, which could still be around by 2050, and will be 100 years old by then, out of date and inefficient.”

He added: “I just felt because I’m in a sustainability role with the district council I should be one of those leading by example. And I’m quite passionate about my work, so despite some disagreement with my wife, year after year we’ve tried to do different things to reduce emissions.”

To qualify as a super home a homeowner must demonstrate a 60 per cent CO2 reduction and be prepared to show others how they did it. Mr Smart will welcome people to his home on Thursday, September 6, and Saturday, September 8, to share experiences and ideas.
