Swanbourne History Project launch event

The Swanbourne History Group has scooped a £7,500 grant to fund a new village history website and an intensive programme of historical research.

The group is one of the first in the UK to receive an All Our Stories grant under a brand new programme from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The village history group has called its project Swanbourne – Getting Our History To The People.

A launch event last Friday night at the village hall was attended by more than 30 people.

The plan is to give educational presentations of local historical stories from archive research, carry out interviews with villagers who have lived in Swanbourne all their lives and publish a series of pamphlets.

The history group, which is a sub-group of the Swanbourne Community Association, says it intends to bring to life every aspect of the village’s long history, and even pre-history.

Spokesman Clive Rodgers said: “It’s great that we have been awarded this grant and we can’t wait to get started.”

He said the group’s first priority is to commission a website. The group will also buy its own equipment, including a digital projector for presentations and a computer.

At the end of the one-year project, the new equipment will be inherited by the community association.

Mr Rodgers said: “All of our group members are inspired by our chairman, Ken Harris, who has lived in and researched the village since 1976. We’ve already done quite a bit of research and we will come up with a series of stories.”

Once the website is up and running, the stories, including those linked to Captain Fremantle and Trafalgar, will be loaded on to it.
