Volunteer to help in case of flooding

WOULD you know what to do or who to contact for help if your property flooded?

The recent rains have again raised questions about how Buckingham residents would cope with a major flood.

Now a new flood action group has been set up in town to help tackle the potential problem.

Following the massive flood of 2007, about 90 Buckingham homes were supplied with pumps and bespoke flood defences, thanks to the Environment Agency and Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC).

Now the new group, Flood Action for Buckingham (FAB) is calling for local people to come forward to act as flood wardens.

Made up of of residents who have been flooded in the past and representatives from Churches Together in Buckingham, FAB aims to organise volunteers to help other people in the event of flooding. It will also advise and support individuals or businesses at risk of flooding and work to help prevent flooding – for example by making sure blocked drains and river debris are cleared by the agencies.

The group is preparing a Buckingham Community Flood Plan which will include areas at flood risk, procedures for flood alerts, contact details and the use of the parish church as the rescue centre. The plan will be put to the test in a ‘dry run’ event on Saturday, September 29.

The group wants to hear from anyone in Buckingham who has previously been flooded to ensure they can be part of the event.

The group also requires 50 to 60 people to operate as community flood volunteers for the ‘dry-run’ event and who can be called upon to help others in the case of a major flood.
