Warning over canal boat break-ins

Narrow boat owners in north Oxfordshire are being warned of a series of break-ins on the Oxford Canal over the last few weeks.

Thames Valley Police has appealed for information after a spike in the number of thefts from boats after Christmas. Boats moored in Thrupp and Yarnton were among those broken into.

PC Richie Iwanoff, investigating the incidents, said: “At this stage, we have had reports that nine boats have been burgled in the last few weeks, with most being reported to us on December 30.

“We are increasing the presence of officers in these areas to prevent any further victims of crime and also catch whoever is responsible.

“The offences have happened around the canal which is a popular walking route with the general public, especially during the holidays, and I would like to encourage anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour, to contact me.”

Anyone with information should call the Thames Valley Police 24-hour non-emergency number 101 and ask to speak to PC Claire Sadler.
