As more and more people leave their four wheeled transport at home during a quick trip to the shops, the Towcester Evening Women’s Institute is helping to provide a way to secure two-wheeled transport in the town.

This week members of the A5 Rangers cycling club joined WI members and Northants County Councillor Chris Lofts to unveil the new cycle racks combined with a planters in the Sponne Shopping Arcade.

The racks were part funded by Mr Lofts’ empowering councillors and community scheme.

Rangers Chairman Sue Holliday said there a few secure bike racks dotted around the town, but these were the first for the Arcade.

She added: “There has been more and more people of all ages taking up cycling over the last three or four years.

“And I see quite a few women these days on a bike with panniers out doing a shop.

“And it is a win win situation; you save money on fuel, it is good for your health, and it reduces pollution.”
