A Winslow woman is running the London Marathon to raise funds for the Anaphylaxis Campaign, a charity dedicated to helping people with potentially life threatening allergies.
Jessica Rawlings has suffered from a peanut, nut and lupin allergy all of her life, and as a result must carry injection pens with her at all times.
She is a final year law student at Nottingham Trent University, and has decided she wants to give something back to a charity that has helped her manage her allergies.
She said: “Last April I watched the London Marathon on TV and something about it appealed.
“As a peanut and nut allergy sufferer, I have been a member of the Anaphylaxis Campaign my whole life.
“They are a fantastic charity who support people with potentially life threatening allergies and their families. As a charity so close to my heart, I decided to have a look at whether you could run the London Marathon on their behalf and fundraise for them.
“From there, I spontaneously applied. I’m more of a thinker than a doer, as being a law student mainly requires sitting and reading, so no, I’m not exactly a sporty person, and I have a habit of biting off more than I can chew. However, I am training as hard as I can around my third year studies and have learnt to really enjoy running.
“More than anything, I’m excited and terrified to run such a long way in less than two months. I just hope that my efforts will result in more people becoming aware of the severity of living with a food allergy, and the truly fantastic support the Anaphylaxis Campaign offers.”
Jessica is running three times a week and going to the gym between five and six times a week, as she hopes to hit the four-and-a-half hour mark for the 26.2 mile run.
She is aiming to raise £2,000 and has set up a fundraising page, www.virginmoneygiving.com/JessicaRawlings, where you can donate, or donations can be made by texting ‘JESR52 £2/£5/£10’ to 70070.
She added: “The generosity of people is what enables the campaign to continue their terrific work, and I will appreciate anyone that will sponsor me, no matter how small an amount.”
